An Autonomous Life is a sensory evocation of the squatting community of ADM in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. For over twenty years ADM, a former shipbuilding dockyard on the outskirts of Amsterdam, has been squatted by a community striving to develop alternative modes of existence. ADM is a collective of families, artists, activists, city nomads and ecological researchers, who simply through their daily lives challenge our traditional notions of urbanity.
Over the past decades, the ADM wharf has built a steady reputation of being one of the most prolific cultural free havens in Amsterdam. The Netherlands has a long history of squatting, with movements in the 1960’s until 1990’s counting as its heyday. However, throughout the last decade successive Dutch governments have cracked down on this practice, reclaiming squatted land for largely commercial ventures. This neoliberal movement has culminated with the residents of ADM scheduled to be evicted by Christmas Day 2018. The ejected community would make room for Koole Maritiem LLC, an industrial demolition and wreck removal company.
This experimental documentary interweaves the fantastic and the quotidian, cinematically immersing us in the daily rhythms of the ADM community. We sensorially experience the set to be evicted squat, its serenity, joy, creativity and communality. The ADM community’s audacious struggle for autonomy exemplifies the possibility of thinking the world differently and putting that into practice through experimentation, as long as we are willing to fight for it.
