Our individual musical journeys started at an early age for each one of us. We met more recently during our musical studies in Utrecht. Despite the fact that we all come from very different musical backgrounds, a shared love for Rebetiko and traditional folk music motivated us to create our own project:
‘Rebetiko Against The Machine’ is a trio formed in Utrecht through our urge to connect with the roots of Greek folk-traditional music, we felt a need to be able to experience and share this unique atmosphere of a traditional gathering during our performance.
An important era for Rebetiko music was between 1930 & 1950, this is when most of the early Rebetiko recordings where made. Listening to the music made during this time frame has given us the most inspiration for our repertoire.
A dark time, with major International conflicts, poverty and insecurity for the working classes shaped the social backdrop that most of the Rebetiko composers emerged from. Coming from the working class and the ‘underworld’ of that time, their songs perfectly created a historical record that describe the experiences, perspectives, feelings and beliefs of society at that time.
With their simplicity and honesty these songs manage to carry their teachings and wisdom forward across all the decades that have followed.
Today we try to keep this music alive and share it with the people!
