Not Tomorrow, But Now! That was the title of the 1995 booklet with which ACU intended to document the final period of its squatted existence.
Now, 30 years later, ACU remains a catalyst for Utrecht’s alternative, radical, and critical cultural scene — a place where people, autonomously and collectively work together to create a better
world. In the final weekend of March — exactly 50 years after the first squatters forced open the door on Voorstraat — ACU will celebrate its anniversary with a three-day festival. On March 7, there will be a reunion for former ACU volunteers and residents from the first 30 years, as well as for the groups that once used ACU as the base for their actions.
Afternoon: exhibition, slideshow and food (3–7 PM)
In the afternoon there’s time to catch up with old friends, explore Nørb’s photo exhibition (Not Tomorrow, But Now!), and revisit memories through the slide show compiled by Jotja. At 5:30 PM, a tasty meal will be served, for which you can buy dinner tickets in the afternoon for 5 euro (or more, so we can help ensure that ACU remains open and accessible to everyone in the future).
Evening: Kwis, Bands and Disco (20 PM)
The evening programme (which is sold out) is also a trip down memory lane, with bands, dancing, and partying. At 8:30 PM, join the Kraak & Kwis with Bone and Gee. Grab your Kahoot (on your phone) and compete to win a golden crowbar!
Seein Red kicks the evening into high gear at 9:30 PM. This DIY band needs no introduction. They’ve played at ACU at least 10 times — always political, always hardcore, always from the heart, and still very much punk. Bandcamp
At 10:15 PM, former ACU furniture The Possible Suspect bring their infectious mix of indi(e)pendent post-punk. The Possible Suspect was formed at ACU bar and is still going strong. All members worked at ACU for years. In 1997, they wrote ACU anthem, “Niet naar huis, want ik wil niet naar de kroeg, naar het ACU toe want het is nog veel te vroeg”, for their set at the never-ending closing party. Will they play it live again?
And if you haven’t started dancing yet, from 11:00 PM it’s finally time to show your best moves! DJs from back in the day will take turns spinning hits from then and now. Who can dance harder than you?! Bandcamp
