Le Guess Who?
Conjunto Media Luna / Devon Rexi / The Ensemble of Cultural Approximation
Interdimensional dub group Devon Rexi skirt and flirt around a motorik kraut-rock mentality with an unmistakably dub-laden physicality and an uncategorizable sense of experimentation. They do this artfully and honestly through an almost deceptively simple arrangement of percussion, bass, sampling and melody. The shifted realities of their songs arrive like quantum conjurings, as if their frequencies are echoing from the furthest wormholes of space. As much as they create something fantastical and yet-unheard, their priority is in understanding vulnerability and friction, reality, fragility, mythologies and everyday resistances.
Fresh collective The Ensemble of Cultural Approximation (TECA) has rapidly established itself in the Dutch underground scene with their self-dubbed “Shroombia”: a high-energy fusion of Latin American musical idioms, psychedelia, post-punk and electronics reinterpreted with a snappy, dreamy, and sometimes raw contemporary edge. Built around drums, guitar, bass and synths, their sound shifts between hypnotic grooves, dreamy textures and raw, explosive passages. Live, these elements lock into a dynamic, body-moving pulse, balancing tightly woven rhythms with unexpected turns and bursts of energy.
Inspired by the cumbia sounds of Colombia, Mexico and the South of California, Conjunto Media Luna has adopted various sonic explorations that have evolved into a solo live set that emerges from electronics, synthesizers, voice and accordion, extending its roots to bass music and heavy electronic riffs. New album S.I.K. (International Kumbia Society) focuses on electronic sounds with harsh melodies that closes up an era of heavy kickdrums and dark vibes. Accordion melodies, sampled fragments, drum machines and sound system pressure intertwine, creating a world where tradition is constantly reimagined through contemporary urban culture.
