Solidarity concert for Vasilis Maggos – Utrecht

More than six years of struggle against state repression, police brutality, and the cover-up of his death.

In the summer of 2020, the city of Volos, Greece, became the centre of a powerful struggle against waste incineration by AGΕT-Lafarge. On June 13, a mass demonstration took place outside the factory, bringing together people resisting the destruction of their environment and the interests of the corporations responsible.

The response was brutal. The state repression mechanism, acting in defence of business interests, attempted to silence the movement through police violence, intimidation, arrests, and the persecution of activists. For two days, police forces operated like an occupying army in the city of Volos, beating demonstrators, sending dozens to hospital, and spreading fear throughout the city.

The culmination of this campaign of repression was the brutal beating and torture of Vasilis Maggos, a young activist, by police officers on June 14, 2020. One month later, on July 13, Vasilis was found dead.

Since his death, a continuous struggle has been waged to expose the circumstances of the police violence against Vasilis, challenge the cover-up attempts of state and judicial authorities, and stand in solidarity with those targeted for resisting environmental destruction and state repression.

This struggle has already led to the conviction of three police officers for causing dangerous bodily harm, while six police officers have faced trial on charges relating to the torture of Vasilis Maggos. The legal proceedings have brought forward disturbing testimonies about police violence and what took place inside the detention facilities.

Yet the struggle is far from over.

The prolonged legal battle is not only politically and emotionally exhausting, but also financially devastating. The enormous legal expenses, together with the ongoing intimidation and prosecution of activists, make material solidarity an essential part of continuing this fight.

In Utrecht, we organise a solidarity concert to support the legal expenses of the case of Vasilis Maggos.

Through music, collective presence, and financial support, we stand alongside his family, comrades, and the fighting movement of Volos. This concert is not simply a fundraising event. It is an act of internationalist solidarity, connecting struggles against police brutality, state repression, corporate power, and environmental destruction across borders.

The struggle for Vasilis’s case concerns all of us.

All we have is each other.

Let us not forget, let us not forgive, and let us fight until the end.
